What is Rigid Thermofoil (RTF)?
Rigid Thermofoil, otherwise known as RTF, is a form of laminate. RTF is a vinyl film applied to the substrate (your old cabinet boxes) with heat and pressure. Thermofoil is available in a large variety of either solid colors or patterns such as woodgrains and metallics which are more popular. The application process makes it possible for the RTF to resemble wood, marble or even granite detailing more closely than laminate can.
Most often used in cabinetry, RTF products are easy to care for and are not likely to chip. They clean well and stand up to punishment from children and pets. RTF is also less expensive than wood and one of the most popular choices for cabinet refacing. Furthermore, RTF is resistant to mold, mildew and rot which makes it a number one choice for bathrooms and kitchens where dampness is likely to occur.
Most people refer to it simply as thermofoil. The attached “Rigid” terminology is a bit redundant since all thermofoil is pretty much rigid.
